Charlie was a true and dear friend to my daughter, Madeleine, his classmate at Marble. His unconditional kindness and generosity were on full display during our last treasured time spent with Charlie. We were at the bookstore together and Madeleine and Charlie had returned to the café, Charlie having gathered up some fabulous pirate paraphernalia for his father to purchase. Madeleine was also toting a beautiful unicorn that she presented to me for purchase and, overhearing me explain to her that we will surely put it on her Christmas list for Santa, Charlie insisted that his father purchase the unicorn for Madeleine along with an adorable “Phoney Bone” stuffed animal. Charlie’s father generously accommodated his request. This moment will always remain a sweet, beautiful memory in my mind of the kindness that Charlie exemplified, and of his unselfish desire to spread joy. Indeed, Madeleine and I still talk about it when we talk about Charlie, which is often. Through Charlie's affection and friendship with Madeleine and by his example, he reminded us how deeply important and rewarding it is to be kind, compassionate, and unselfish. Thank you, Charlie.
