Memories of a grandmother

I am John Waller's mother and these are a small selection from the treasured memories I have of my beloved grandson, Charlie. - arriving at the house and being greeted by Charlie shouting "you came back Am-ma" and then joining with his sister Esther in ransacking my suitcase for presents. - several wonderful lakeside holidays we spent in houses made available by kind friends - the week we had together exploring the campus, several times meeting John for a picnic. - the two wonderful days I spent with Charlie and his friends, the first at his kindergarten and the second at school - the day we spent on Ed's boat which added realism to his pirate fantasies - joining in as Charlie and his sister played in the basement - the 'sleepovers' with cuddles and storytelling - the most memorable 'sleepover' of all when the two of us shared a bed with Kris and Boston the dog! - watching as he extended his grandpas moustache with ink from a felt tip pen whilst grandpa pretended to be asleep - the adventures we all had when the family came over to England last summer, particularly the wonderful days spent in the beautiful village of Great Tew and the final day on which we all went punting in Oxford with Jane and Jason's family - sitting with Charlie on the settee as he was recovering from radium treatment and singing along at least thirty times, one after another, with a cartoon based on the song 'dem bones' - having him whisper to me in bed that he did not like to tell his mummy and daddy when he had a headache because it made them very worried - seeing him asleep in his sister's arms whilst she tenderly held him - a final memory a few weeks before he died of the two of us cuddling, talking and making books about pirates and dragons To me these are indelible memories and recalling them will always produce a very powerful mixture of love, pride and pain.
