Hidden Gifts

How do you amuse a two-year old boy? In Charlie’s case, just let him find a way to give pleasure to another. Nothing would excite him more. When I accepted the gift of a treasured dinosaur, he giggled with joy. After we moved up to Michigan to be closer to our grandchildren, Charlie was thrilled to come and hand feed our dog, passing her each bite as if it were a treat. Rewarded by a wagging tail, he devised, though we were unaware, a more elaborate plan. He vanished for a while behind the half-opened boxes of our shipment from North Carolina in our new home, and we guessed he was playing a game of his own. Some days later our dog took an unusual interest in one of my wife’s handbags. It was filled with dog food. Over the coming months, I would find small handfuls of dog food in boxes, bowls, suit pockets and my shoes – treats that been secreted away by Charlie during that early visit for the dog to find later. Now I quite expect some day to come across some hidden gift in some unexpected place. And I will listen for Charlie’s delighted laughter when I find it.
