Pictures of Charlie

I was fortunate enough to spend a few happy days with Charlie and his family on two separate occasions in the last couple of years. While in East Lansing in the spring of 2012, Charlie, John, and I had an early evening in an unguarded excavation site in the middle of town. John and Charlie fearlessly explored unstable looking piles of rock and dangerous machinery while I stood on the sidelines, avoiding any risk with the excuse of taking photos. My other abiding memory of that visit was taking the new arrival in the family, Boston the dog, for walkies. Or rather, Boston took us for walkies, dislocating human shoulders with total abandon in her pursuit of squirrels. Charlie clearly loved Boston, and the memory of him bounding up to her and giving her a big squeeze with a look of complete joy and satisfaction on his face will always stay with me. The second lot of pictures are from Charlie’s visit to England last summer. Here's Charlie the muscle man on a wall in Great Tew. The following day we visited Blenheim Palace. There was a unfortunate incident in the grounds with some poo (I still hope of the deer variety) in a tree, and a moment for a picture of Charlie attempting to discharge a cannon perilously close to Esther. For me, these are pictures of a life filled with wonder, happiness, and love. Of course I know that for Charlie and his family there were other moments, of immense, unthinkable sadness and pain, that I could only witness at a distance, and in despair. But to see the way they dealt with these moments is to see an example of the best way to live and treat people. I will always remember Charlie with great happiness and love and be proud to call John, Abby, and Esther my friends.
